SonarBell® Frequency Optimisation Process

SALT Ltd manufactures an increasing range or pre-optimised product.  If your required fequency is not available or you require operation over a combination of frequencies then you may wish to contact us or consider our Bespoke Design Service.

Our design process allows us to choose between single, multiple and broadband responses as we change the physical parameters of the product in order to maximise response for a given frequency or frequencies.

In this example we have used 325kHz as our peak frequency with three different sized SonarBell® units 150mm, 200mm and 250mm outer diameter.

SonarBell® In The Real World

The underwater environment is a challenging one in which to operate in and SALT Ltd has taken considerable care in considering how to deliver a suitable and safe technical performance over the periods which customers require.

  • Lifetime: SonarBell® gains much of its physical strength from its shell material. Extensive effort has been exerted to ensure that this does not deteriorate when left in water long term.  After 18 months saturation testing no deterioration in mechanical properties has been seen.
  • Anti-fouling: SALT Ltd recognises the need to protect the SonarBell® from fouling in the first 100m or so of water and to that end we are working to make available a range of professional anti-fouling coatings to our customers.
  • Depth  Limitation: The SonarBell® has been designed to be free flooding and consequently pressure equalises inside and out.  We are not aware of significant physical parameter changes with depth.
  • Safety certification: SALT has engaged with exernal experts to examine and build the safety case for the product.  The safety case for SonarBell® is currently being extended to 4100m.
  • Physical robustness: It is possible to coat the SonarBell® to make it physically more robust with minimal degradation of performance provided the right material properties are used.  SALT Ltd can make these alterations by request.

SonarBell® Frequency Optimisation Process
In order to maximise the performance of the SonarBell® it is key to optimise the frequency of the bell to the sonar system being used to detect them.
